DRIVING ON THE LEFT
Left-Hand Traffic
Thailand drives on the left side of the road, similar to the UK, Japan, and Australia. If you're from a country that drives on the right, this will require some adjustment. Most riders adapt within the first hour, but extra caution is needed at intersections and when overtaking.

ROAD CONDITIONS
HIGHWAY QUALITY
Thailand's main highways are generally well-maintained with smooth asphalt surfaces. The country has invested heavily in road infrastructure, and major routes are comparable to Western standards.
RURAL & MOUNTAIN ROADS
Secondary roads and mountain routes can vary in quality. Here's what you may encounter:
→ Occasional potholes after rainy season
→ Gravel or sand on mountain corners
→ Uneven surfaces on older roads
→ Wildlife crossings (dogs, chickens, elephants!)
DEALING WITH CHECKPOINTS
Police Stops Are Routine
Police checkpoints are common throughout Thailand, particularly in border regions and on major highways. They exist primarily for contraband control and road safety enforcement. For properly documented riders, they're nothing more than a brief, friendly stop. On guided tours, our team handles any communication needed.
Stay Calm & Polite
A friendly smile goes a long way. Thai police are generally courteous and professional — mirror that energy.
Have Documents Ready
Keep your passport (or a copy), driving license, and IDP easily accessible. Officers will ask to see them.

COMMON HAZARDS
Scooters
Often weave unpredictably between lanes and appear from blind spots.
U-turns
Vehicles may U-turn without warning, even on busy highways.
Trucks
Large vehicles may pull out slowly or drift across lanes.
Dogs
Stray dogs often sleep on roads or chase passing bikes.

LICENSE REQUIREMENTS
To legally ride a motorcycle in Thailand, you need the following documents.
Motorcycle License
A valid motorcycle license from your home country is essential.
International Driving Permit
An IDP with motorcycle endorsement — must be obtained before arriving in Thailand.
Passport Copy
Always carry a copy of your passport while riding. Keep the original in a safe place.

MAE HONG SON LOOP
The legendary Mae Hong Son Loop features over 4,000 curves through stunning mountain scenery. Starting from Chiang Mai, this route takes you through hill tribe villages, hot springs, and some of Thailand's most breathtaking landscapes.
SAMOENG LOOP
A perfect day ride from Chiang Mai, the Samoeng Loop offers a taste of northern Thailand's mountain roads without the commitment of a multi-day trip. Excellent twisties, beautiful viewpoints, and great local food.
EASTERN SEABOARD
From Pattaya, explore the scenic coastal roads heading towards Cambodia. This route combines beach views, fishing villages, and national parks. Less crowded than the north, with excellent seafood stops.
