West Thailand Kanchanaburi Experience
A 9-day adventure through Thailand's wild west — the Death Railway, Erawan Falls, off-road Pilok, Sangkhlaburi's sunken temples, Ayutthaya ruins, and 1,400km of jungle wilderness on the Myanmar border.
Whether you're experiencing Thailand for the first time or have lived here as an ex-pat for many years, Thailand's western borders are not to be missed. Most know the area for its famous Bridge over the River Kwai and world-class waterfalls. But this vast mountainous area is so much more than that.
Bordering Myanmar, this magical tropical jungle wilderness is stunning to see. With flooded lowland valleys and awe-inspiring mountain backdrops, this area has been the focus of countless Hollywood movies — and for very good reason. It is simply stunning.
You'll experience a land that stood still in time. Thais who live in this remote national treasure have been living their lives traditionally for hundreds of years, far away from modern western influence. Untouched nature in all its glory, and wildlife beyond your expectations.
Day 1 — Tour Preparation & Departure
Airport collection or hotel pick-up. All personal needs and requirements addressed and taken care of from your initial booking.
Day 2 — The Tour Begins (300km)
Our luxury minivans and cycle fleet make their way to Kanchanaburi. A full briefing of the area, trails, and terrain. That evening we feast in total comfort in preparation for the demanding days ahead, with time to take in tourist attractions and get some R&R.
Day 3 — The Death Railway
The Death Railway mountain pass — a sight and experience not to be missed. The entire steel structure reveals itself around every curve, hugging the mountainside with deep lush valleys stretching into the distance. A national war museum built in commemoration depicts the sad events and horrors of these dark days. Lunch Thai-style overlooking the famous bridge and clean slow-running river.
Day 4 — Erawan National Park
The 50km ride to the falls is outstanding with roads to die for — winding through valleys and climbing steep inclines. Erawan Falls is recognised as one of the best waterfalls in the world. The hike to the top takes you past level after level of crystal clear ponds that look like a themed attraction. This tropical paradise is just waiting for you to dive in.
Day 5 — Off-Road Experience at Pilok
Countless twists and turns ascending to a mountainous wilderness. Pilok — a subdistrict hidden in mountain tops on the Myanmar border, once famous for tin and tungsten mining. Covering 725 km² of 95% rainforest and jungle. The road ends and dirt track becomes your guide — steep sections with rocks and loose dirt. A comfortable homestay in a sleepy village nestled between rainforest mountains and mystical lakes.
Day 6 — Sangkhlaburi, the Land That Time Forgot
Deeper into the past where life resembles 19th century Thailand. Valleys purposely flooded by the Thai Government created spectacular lakes. Khao Laem Reservoir — a stepping stone for snaking rivers leading into Myanmar. Thailand's largest wooden bridge precariously balances above the water. We access sunken temples by rented boat, then visit an ancient golden temple with Myanmar roots guarded by lions.
Day 7 — Suphanburi & Phu Toei National Park (300km)
Through Phu Toei National Park with its Tewada Summit. Suphanburi has a distinctive Chinese feel centred around the Tha Chin River. The 100-year-old Sam Chuk Market, Baan Kwai buffalo village with rice paddy fields, and traditional stilted housing.
Day 8 — The Historical Site of Ayutthaya (75km)
Thailand's former capital dating back to the 14th century — once home to 1 million inhabitants before the Burmese invasion in the 18th century. Two ancient ruins sites, lunch among the temples, and thousands of friendly primates making their home in the ruins. Explore Ayutthaya's vibrant nightlife.
Day 9 — Homeward Bound via Silver Lake
Return trip past Bangkok with fast-flowing highways. A final stop at Silver Lake — vineyards, Buddha Mountain, and a waterpark. A farewell feast at base camp before chauffeur transfer to your hotel.
